What is Electrotherapy?

Electrotherapy is a treatment some osteopaths use as part of a broader plan to help manage pain, inflammation, and muscle weakness. It involves using mild electrical currents applied to the body through small pads placed on the skin. It’s safe, non-invasive, and often used to support muscle recovery and nerve function.

How it works:

  • Electrodes are placed on the skin over the area being treated.

  • A controlled electrical current stimulates nerves or muscles.

  • This can block pain signals, improve circulation, or activate muscle fibres, depending on the settings.

Types commonly used in Osteopathy:

  • TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation): For pain relief.

  • EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation): To activate weak or tight muscles.

  • Interferential Therapy (IFT): Deeper stimulation for chronic pain or inflammation.

Why an Osteopath might use Elecrotherapy:

It can be a helpful addition when treating:

  • Chronic pain conditions (like arthritis or sciatica)

  • Muscle spasms or weakness

  • Back and neck pain

  • Sports injuries

  • Postural issues causing discomfort

  • Nerve irritation or inflammation

Benefits of Electrotherapy

  • Pain relief – helps reduce the need for medication

  • Reduces inflammation and swelling

  • Improves circulation – speeding up the healing process

  • Strengthens weak muscles or relaxes tight ones

  • Non-invasive and drug-free

  • Can be combined with hands-on osteopathic treatment for better results
