What is Electrotherapy?
Electrotherapy is a treatment some osteopaths use as part of a broader plan to help manage pain, inflammation, and muscle weakness. It involves using mild electrical currents applied to the body through small pads placed on the skin. It’s safe, non-invasive, and often used to support muscle recovery and nerve function.
How it works:
-
Electrodes are placed on the skin over the area being treated.
-
A controlled electrical current stimulates nerves or muscles.
-
This can block pain signals, improve circulation, or activate muscle fibres, depending on the settings.
Types commonly used in Osteopathy:
-
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation): For pain relief.
-
EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation): To activate weak or tight muscles.
-
Interferential Therapy (IFT): Deeper stimulation for chronic pain or inflammation.
Why an Osteopath might use Elecrotherapy:
It can be a helpful addition when treating:
-
Chronic pain conditions (like arthritis or sciatica)
-
Muscle spasms or weakness
-
Back and neck pain
-
Sports injuries
-
Postural issues causing discomfort
-
Nerve irritation or inflammation
